Many folks are familiar with prosthetist and orthoptist, but what exactly does a pedorthist do? Floyd Brace has your answer! But first, let’s review pedorthics:
Pedorthics is the science and practice of evaluating, fabricating and delivering footwear and foot orthoses to prevent or improve painful or disabling conditions of the foot and ankle caused by disease, congenital defect, overuse or injury.
A credentialed pedorthist is a specialist in using footwear – shoes, shoe modifications, foot orthoses and other pedorthic devices – to solve problems in, or related to, the foot and lower limb. When a foot requires medical attention, footwear may well be a factor in the patient’s treatment, recovery or rehabilitation. It’s a team approach: While the doctor treats your foot, the credentialed pedorthist addresses your footwear needs. For example, when developing a therapeutic shoe a pedorthist could consider the following modifications:
- For individuals with diabetes, shoes could include low heels, a spacious, rounded toe box, well-cushioned heel and sole, and soft uppers that can mold to the shape of the wearer’s foot.
- To allow insertion of a molded foot (FO) or ankle-foot (AFO) orthosis or to accommodate minor deformities, shoes with extra depth throughout are commonly prescribed.
- For advanced diabetes and gross deformities, custom-molded shoes or boots are generally necessary.
- Therapeutic shoes are available in a wide variety of styles and colors.
